Grateful
a solo thankgiving
For the past few years, I have spent the Thanksgiving holiday solo. My family lives in Michigan and I am in Maryland, so I travel home for the Christmas holiday instead.
Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season, which can be full of time spent with friends and family, frantic shopping and travel and not much time to yourself. I enjoy the holiday season, but it can be a stressful time of year. By spending the Thanksgiving holiday by myself, I get to prioritize and do the things that make me happy, kicking off my holiday season in a positive mindset.
My favorite way to prepare is by asking myself what my ideal day would look like, what do I want to spend the day doing?
I usually start the day with some type of movement, I always feel best when I prioritize starting my day by moving my body. Last year I did an outdoor boot camp class, this year I went for a run. Afterwards, I love making myself a hot cup of coffee and my favorite breakfast. I will spend some time relaxing mid morning (and usually calling or FaceTiming with my family) before cooking my choice Thanksgiving meal for the day. I love to cook, so I will plan something fun or different from what I normally make. My post meal activities usually involve holiday movies, a cocktail and more relaxing before going to bed on the early side to get a great nights sleep. I am all about doing the things that make me feel good.
Spending my Thanksgiving holiday this way always leaves me feeling refreshed and recharged before the whirlwind that is December. I am grateful to be able to spend the day any way I want to. I am grateful that I have a loving family who is understanding of my plans. I am grateful for my friends who always invite me to be part of their Thanksgiving day.
I wouldn't want it any other way.
